HIKING GEAR GUIDE

No single product is ever best for everyone. At TMO, our expert staff will help you find the best fit and function for your hiking adventure. Below are some of our staff favorites.

Heavy Duty Backpacker
La Sportiva Cascade GTX

This is our pick for heavy duty backpacking when you need to handle a variety of terrain over multiple days on and off the trail. We really like the exclusive 3D Flex ankle hinge system that provides exceptional lateral flexibility. No doubt this is a heavy duty boot, but it is also comfortable and versatile. You can try one on any time at TMO on the Plaza in Taos!

Saloman

Medium Backpacker/Hiker
Salomon Comet 3D GTX

This awesome boot is a little less intense than the Cascade and perfect for an overnight or 2-day backpack trip. With great heel stability, extra cushioning and mid height support, it is also a great choice for longer day hikes like the Bull of the Woods 14 mile trek.

Multisport Hiking & Approach Shoe
Scarpa Zen

If you’re looking for comfort on the trail and up to the approach, you will reach zen with this lightweight choice from Scarpa. It combines the functionality of a climbing shoe with the all day comfort of a light hiker.

Breathable Hikers
Merrell Moab Ventilator
KEEN Voyageur

This one is a tie. First up is the Merrell Moab. It has been around for years and is now offered with the added plus of breathability to keep your feet cool, dry and comfy. Let’s face it. We don’t get much rain in Taos and it dries quickly when we do. So for most day hikes in the spring, summer and fall, this shoe offers a lighter and more comfortable choice than the heavier, waterproof choices.

Another great choice for day hikes in warm weather is the KEEN Voyageur. The Voyageur is also well ventilated to keep your feet dry and cool. It fits differently than the Merrell so we recommend stopping by TMO and trying them both to get the best fit.

Trail Runner
Montrail Mountain Masochist

This is the best all-around, all-conditions trail runner we have found. It is lightweight and offers more flex than most off road shoes. But it is tough and has the traction and support to handle most trails with ease. Stop by TMO and try a pair on. You’ll see why the Masochist won the Gear of the Year award from Outside Magazine.

Watershoe/Sandals
Chaco

If you see a sandal out on the trail, chances are it will be a Chaco. These amazingly durable and comfortable sandals offer support like no other. Talk about breathability! They are truly the ultimate outdoor sandal.

Minimalist Running
Vibram Five Fingers

This is it! The original that started the barefoot running revolution. With a stretch nylon upper that fits low on the foot and the Vibram TC1 performance sole which offers amazing traction over a variety of terrain, you’ve got to try a pair of FiveFingers
