Río Grande del Norte National Monument July 2014 Hikes

SAT July 5 – 9am, 3 hrs Big Arsenic Trail, Wild Rivers

Meet at the Wild Rivers Visitor Center for this moderate 3 mile round trip hike into the Rio Grande Gorge. Features petroglyps, an ‘inverted’ ecosystem, and a wild river.

SAT July 5 – 9am, 2 hrs La Vista Verde Trail, Orilla Verde

This 2.5 mile roundtrip hike will start at the trailhead on NM 567 just west of Taos Junction Bridge. Excellent views, wild life, and archeology highlight this trail; led by park ranger

SAT July 12 – 9am, 1 hr Geology for Astronauts

Meet Daniel Rael at La Junta Point in Wild Rivers to find out why the Monument’s geology is special enough to bring NASA astronauts to the area for a week of training.

SAT July 12 – 9am, 2 hrs Picuris/Slide Trail, Orilla Verde

SUN, July 13 – noon, 4 hrs Punche Lake

An easy Sunday walk to view unique archaeological remains with BLM archaeologist Merrill Dicks. Meet at the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge rest area; the hike itself will take about 2.5 hours. The site is a 45 minute drive from the rest area.

SUN, July 13 – 9am, 4 hrs Picuris Trail, Orilla Verde

Join Rocky Mountain Youth Corpsman Alex Glaves for an exploration of the area’s history and land uses over the past several generations. Meet at the trailhead just east of Taos

SAT July 19 – 9am, 3 hrs Pescado Trail, Wild Rivers

Meet at the Red River State Fish Hatchery for this moder- ately difficult , 3.7 mile hike to the rim of the Red River gorge and back.

SUN July 20 – 9am, 3 hrs Miners’ Trail

Meet at John Dunn Bridge (west side) before travelling to the trailhead for this moderate 2.5 mile round trip hike from the west rim down to the Rio Grande. Sensational views and scandalous history highlight this remote spot in the gorge; led by park ranger Del Dubois.

SAT July 26 – 9am, 3 hrs Las Vistas de Questa Trail

Meet at the trailhead parking lot off Don Martinez Road in Questa at 9 am. This is a moderately difficult 3.7 mile round trip hike to a beautiful overlook of the Questa area.

SAT July 26 – 7am, 2 hrs Bird Walk in Orilla Verde

Local bird expert Robert Templeton will meet at the Rio Grande Gorge Visitor Center in Pilar for this two hour exploration of the birds that are currently in the Lower Gorge of the Rio Grande.

SAT July 26 – 9am, 2 hrs Petaca Point Trail

Meet at the trailhead on NM 567 on the rim above Taos Junction Bridge for this easy 2.5 mile round trip hike along the west rim of the Gorge. Panoramic views, archaeological sites are explored with park ranger Barry Weinstock.

 Bring a snack, hat, sunscreen, water and sturdy footwear.
