Río Grande del Norte National Monument Sept 2014 Hikes

This will be our last full month of special events and guided hikes in the Monument.  We are planning on offering a couple of special hikes in October, if the weather permits.

Saturday, September 6 – 3 to 9 pm

NeoRio 2014 / National Public Lands Day at Wild Rivers 3 pm – The ‘T’ House, Wild Rivers Visitor Center Guest artist Andrea Polli explores the relationships between humans and wild plants of the Questa area and Monument, and invites you to make ’wild tea’ and experience the multi-media ’T’ House. 6 pm – The Rio Feast Project, Montoso Campground

Enjoy a community dinner by artist and cook, Ric Lum, with food foraged from wild places and farms in the local area, as well as campfire music by High Desert Acoustic Duo and readings by poet Erin Bad Hand, all inspired by this year’s theme, ‘Thinking Wilderness,’ in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.

Saturday, September 6 – 9 am 2 hours

La Vista Verde Trail, Orilla Verde ‒ Meet at the trailhead on NM 567, about 1/2 mile west of Taos Junction Bridge for this easy 2.5 mile round trip hike with ranger Barry Weinstock. Impressive views from within the gorge and a compelling series of petroglyphs.

Saturday, September 13 – 9 am 2 hours

La Senda del Medio Trail, Orilla Verde ‒ An easy 2 1/2 mile hike starting at the trailhead in Pilar Campground on NM 570. The trail follows a wide ledge about 200 feet above the river, offering dramatic views up and down river, as well as to the rim and down to the river. Led by ranger Robert Fernandez.

Saturday, September 13 – 9:30 am 2.5 hours

Chiflo Trail, Wild Rivers ‒ Meet at the Chiflo Trailhead for this gentle stroll through an edible, medicinal landscape. Herbalist Cathy Hope will introduce you to the abundance under our feet. Cathy of Iris Herbals, practicing since 1977, is passionate about using her knowledge to give a new perspective on the Monument. Pack a bag lunch if you’d like to share a meal with Cathy after the hike. Co- sponsored by LEAP, this is a Thinking Wilderness event.

Saturday, September 20 – 9 am 2 hours

The Slide Trail/Old 570, Orilla Verde ‒ Meet at the new trailhead at the end of County Road C-110 (about 3 miles past the UNM Klauer campus) for this moderate 3 mile round trip hike. Great views of the Rio Pueblo de Taos canyon, petroglyphs, geologic features, and possible wildlife sightings, led by park ranger

Sunday, September 21 – 9 am 2 hours

Mountain Biking at Taos Valley Overlook ‒ Meet at the trailhead on NM 68 for this 9 mile moderate loop ride on some of the trails in the Taos Valley Overlook area, led by park manager Randy Roch.

Saturday, September 27 – 9 am 2 hours

Big Arsenic Trail, Wild Rivers – A special hike to commemo- rate Aron Rael, Questa resident and former park ranger at Wild Rivers, led by his wife, Maggie Evans Rael. Meet at the Wild Rivers Visitor Center for this moderate 3 mile round- trip hike into the gorge.

Saturday, September 27 – 9 am 2 hours

Picuris Trail, Orilla Verde – A steep and challenging 2 1/2 mile roundtrip hike up to the east rim of the gorge and back to the Rio Grande. Meet park ranger Robert Fernandez at the Taos Junction Bridge on NM 570 for this hike featuring history and archaeology in a spectacular setting.


Bring a snack, hat, sunscreen, water and sturdy footwear.
