About Red River

Life at 8,750′! Red River was once home to Ute and Jicarilla Apaches. By the 19th century, Red River used to be known as River City and was discovered explorers, fur trappers, and prospectors. The mountains were carved with hundreds of mines for gold, silver, and copper. Some of these mines were called Golden Treasure, Silver King, and Black Copper- you’ll see streets named after these mines!

When the boomtown faded, homesteaders replaced prospectors and River City entered a new era by renting out abandoned miner’s cabins to visitors from the flatlands wanting to escape the summer heat.

These days, you can spend your days in the winter skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling…the list goes on! Tubing is fun for the whole family and great to warm up with hot chocolate afterwards at Texas Red’s Steakhouse. Don’t forget to catch the ski area’s Torchlight Parade every Saturday night at 7 pm on The Face, watching skiers and snowboarders ride down in the dark with road flares and fireworks afterwards.

In the summer, there is nothing more relaxing than strolling Main Street and exploring the shops. You can also whittle away your time by hiking, riding horses, zoomin’ the trails on your side-by-side or ATV, or fishing in the Red River. In the evenings, it’s awesome to hang out under a porch and watch the spectacular thunderstorms or hanging out by a bonfire. No matter your desired activity level, Red River has something for everyone!
